The Bhatiapara-Jashore-Khulna-Benapole highway in the Kashiani upazila area of Gopalganj district is in a dilapidated condition. Thousands of people from six districts of the southern part of the country use this road every day.

Besides, hundreds of trucks carrying goods from Benapole port to different parts of the country ply this road. The road has caused immense sufferings to the commuters.

Locals complained that the Gopalganj Roads and Highways Department did not repair the four-kilometre stretch of the road from Bhatiapara to Kalna Ferry Ghat in the last four years. On the other hand, for a long time, sand traders have been doing their business on the side of the road.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sabbir Ahmed Janan said the sand traders have been fined several times through mobile courts to protect the road. But it did not work.

Sakirul Islam, regional engineer of Gopalganj RHD, said, "The road has been damaged due to the movement of 10-wheeler trucks loaded with sand. "We tried but could not save the road. However, the eviction drive will be carried out again", he added.
