Stick spinach farming changing fortune of many farmers in Magura district

MAGURA, July 02: Stick spinach (data shak) cultivation is turning fortune wheel of many grassroots farmers in the district.

Some farmers said stick spinach farming is easy. It does not require huge space or much production cost.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said some 35 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation of stick spinach in the district this season.

Moshiar Mollah of Jagla village under Magura Sadar said he cultivated the item on one bigha of land this season.

The farmer said he has recently completed the harvest and made a net profit of Tk 25,000.

Bata Krishna of Keshtopur village under Magura Sadar said stick spinach is a short-duration vegetable. Farmers can harvest it after 40 days of the cultivation. Moreover, it can be produced twice a year.

"I have been growing the item on commercial basis over the last three years as it is profitable", he added.

Sources said around 2,000 people here are engaged with the farming of stick spinach. 

Magura DAE official Shohrab Hossein said stick spinach cultivation is expanding in the area for high market demand.
