Global Covid-19 cases exceed 62 million

The number of global coronavirus (Covid-19) cases surged past 62 million on Sunday, according to data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

The number of confirmed cases across the world rose to 62,158,338 while the death toll climbed to 1,450,578, reports UNB.

In the United States, there have been more than 13.23 million cases with 266,014 deaths as of Sunday morning, according to the real-time count kept by JHU.

The number of new COVID-19 cases reported in the US reached 205,557 on Friday, according to data from JHU – the first time its daily figure topped the 200,000 mark. Its previous daily high was 196,000 on November 20, reports AP

Currently, there are nearly 90,000 Covid-19 patients hospitalised across the US, according to the Covid tracking project.

The country has so far recorded more than 4.0 million official Covid-19 cases in November, representing roughly 30 per cent of the country's case total, according to JHU data.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidance last Friday urging Americans to stay home and not travel for Thanksgiving. Yet, millions of Americans are traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, India's Covid-19 tally reached 9,392,919 as 41,810 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the health ministry.

According to it, the death toll mounted to 136,696 with 496 new deaths since Saturday morning.

There are still 453,956 active cases in the country, while 8,802,267 coronavirus patients discharged so far from hospitals.

Over the past few days, New Delhi has been witnessing a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases. In the past 24 hours, as many as 4,998 new cases and 89 deaths were recorded, and 6,512 people had recovered, showed the data released by the local health department.

Brazil registered 587 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the national count to 172,561, the Health Ministry said Saturday.

Meanwhile, 51,922 new cases were recorded, taking the nationwide tally to 6,290,272.

Situation in Bangladesh

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases continues to rise in Bangladesh as health authorities detected 1,908 new patients across the country in 24 hours until Saturday, taking the total to 460,619.

Besides, 36 more patients lost lives to Covid-19 in the period, raising the death toll to 6,580 as the mortality rate stood at 1.43 per cent, said the Directorate General of Health Services.

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8. The infection number reached the 300,000-mark on August 26. The first death was reported on March 18 and the death toll exceeded 6,000 on November 4.
