ALTHOUGH summer in our country is hot and humid, it is a season for variety of fruits. Summer has been a fruit bearing season over the centuries in our country. It is a season for popular fruits like mangoes, jack fruits, pumpkins, litchis, pineapples and water melons. Excessive heat drains out minerals from our body which are amply compensated by these fruits and many others. Frequent power cuts and energy and water shortage make life miserable for the city dwellers, and the Summer fruits appear as a matter of great relief for them. Bangladesh has a subtropical monsoon climate characterized by wide seasonal variations in rainfall, high temperatures and humidity. There are three distinct seasons in Bangladesh: a hot, humid summer from March to June; a cool, rainy monsoon season from June to October; and a cool, dry winter from October to March. Although summer torments the citizens of Bangladesh with excessive heat and sweat it also presents us with many mouth watering delicacies like the different fruits mentioned above. At present market is flooded with sweet watermelons although the price is on the higher side. Each satisfying and mouth watering watermelon contains 6 per cent of sugar and 91 per cent of water and obviously it is very good for our health. Mango which is grown aplenty in summer in our country is a prime summer fruit. The season for litchis is a short lived one is also grown in summer. Boroi or Jujube is another small and tasty fruit. More than 60 varieties of fruits are grown in Bangladesh. Each one is unique in taste and variety.
