Respecting Bangla language

Published :

Updated :

SIXTY-FIVE years ago, the Language Movement martyrs laid down their lives on February 21 in 1952 for recognition of Bangla as a state language. The day was later declared the International Mother Language Day from 1999 by the UN. Every year, on this day, the nation pays tributes to the language martyrs of our country.
But there is a big question mark about our love for Bangla. Every year, text books are printed with a lot of mistakes. Not very long ago, the signboard of Bangla Academy was corrected. Bangla is in a poor shape in many signboards here and there.
Bangla words are also differently written in the textbooks from the words written in the Bangla Academy dictionary (Edited by Jamil Choudhury). And even words are differently spelt in one newspaper to another.
There is no Bangla dictionary in the website yet and so we cannot correct our spelling. There are some anomalies between textbooks and Bangla Academy dictionary regarding word spellings in Bangla.
I would like to draw the attention of our Prime Minister, the Minister for Education and the concerned authorities to form a committee to identify mistakes in usages of Bangla words and correct those. A website can be created where people can find the right spellings and usages of Bangla words.
