Public meeting causes endless suffering

The ruling party's public meeting on Wednesday left the common people of the city in pains. Many of us usually do not step outside the house if it is not absolutely necessary, more so when a public meeting is scheduled to take place in Dhaka. The rally on January 10, led to a long traffic gridlock and the commuters were seen standing helplessly as there were very few vehicles and limited number of roads open. A large number of commuters on their way back from their work places or places of appointment or business centres were finding it difficult to find a transport and reach home. They started to move on foot. Women and elderly people were the worst sufferers and particularly the hospital-bound people were in a real bad shape.
As it is, Dhaka is a city of perennial traffic jam and political meetings create added sufferings for the common people. Even on the other day when a student organisation was observing its anniversary, things turned out to be another round of sufferings for the common people. Many of us strongly feel that public meetings should be held on weekends or on holidays to minimise the sufferings of the common people.
