SAVAR is an industrial hub in Bangladesh. It is a border Upazila of Dhaka district. One can reach Savar municipality within one and a half hours by road from zero point of Dhaka metropolis by road. A good number of industrial units are operating on both sides of Dhaka-Savar highway. In fact it is a centre of garment industries. Recently tannery factories of Dhaka city (Hazaribag) have been shifted to Savar. More than two million officers, staff, industrial workers and local people live there. Hundreds of small and medium business houses are operating in Savar. But there is no public medical college to impart medical education.
Savar will be an appropriate location for a full-fledged public medical college for undergraduate medical education to provide medical services. It will undoubtedly improve the standard of health services of Savar and adjoining areas.
Bangladesh has enough teachers to impart medical courses at the graduate and post-graduate levels. As Savar is only one and a half hours' journey from Dhaka city, availability of faculty members for a medical college will not be a problem. They will rather be encouraged to serve in Savar Medical College due to its proximity with Dhaka. The government should utilise this opportunity and include in its list of projects a self-contained public medical college at Savar so that more students in the country can get admission to study medicine and surgery. With similar medical colleges set up in districts, quality of health care services will automatically improve.
