For a cleaner and greener Dhaka

DHAKA is not a clean city by any standard. But it could have been a much better city if we, the citizens of Dhaka, were a little more conscious of our civic responsibilities. Unfortunately, no tangible efforts to keep Dhaka clean are visible. Household wastes are scattered everywhere, potholes on roads remain uncared for months, a little rain causes flood in the town and so on. Recently a "Clean Dhaka 2016" campaign launched by the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation who has pledged to set up multiple waste transfer stations, public toilets, remove illegal billboards, repair hundreds of  roads of  Old Dhaka, and free roads and pavements from illegal occupation, among other things.
It's a grand vision but the mission is complex and multidimensional. The city corporations are not empowered to coordinate the function of the 50 plus departments that are responsible for the planning, development and management of Dhaka's roads and streets. They do not have enough resources and well-trained staff to carry out the ambitious project. It is a gigantic task to  free roads and pavements from vendors and handle the influx of people to the capital everyday which are some of the main reasons behind making the city dirty.
If things continue like this, the situation will be far worse in near future. We surely do not want our children to grow up and live in unhealthy atmosphere. Dhaka is a big cosmopolitan city compare and it has large population. There is less green space. We must also fulfil our civic responsibilities. Let us not forget the famous saying "Cleanliness is next to godliness"
