The sale of warm clothes has gained ground in Dhaka city due to a gradual fall in mercury at the start of winter season.
Visiting different permanent and makeshift shops on Friday, the FE found people of varied income groups crowding to buy warm clothes to stave off biting cold.
Second-hand woolen sweaters, blazer, warm caps and other items were selling at shops based on footpaths at cheap and affordable rates.
Customers, mainly those on low incomes, rushed to footpath and roadside shops at Gulistan, Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, Paltan, Gausia Hawkers Market, Elephant Road and Paltan areas for the same.
A piece of second-hand sweater of different sizes was selling between Tk 250 and Tk 350 and blazer between Tk 1,000 and Tk 1,500.
Warm caps depending on sizes were selling between Tk 50 and Tk 100 per piece.
Shops at different shopping malls, mainly at Bangabazar Supermarket, Noorjahan Supermarket, New Market and others were selling full-sleeve warm T-shirt, jacket, denim shirt, blankets and other winter items.
Locally-made jackets of different sizes were selling at Tk 1,200-2,000, full-sleeve warm T-shirt at Tk 250-500 and hoodies at Tk 800-1,000.
Imported clothes, mainly Chinese-made attire, were also selling alongside the locally-made clothes like jackets, hoodies and others.
A trader at Police Welfare Supermarket, noted for foreign items, at Nayapaltan told the FE that he has collection of new varieties of Chinese jackets.
He sells different types of jackets depending on quality between Tk 2,500 and Tk 4,000.
Prices of local and foreign blankets were also in high demand among customers.
A piece of local blanket depending on size and quality sells at Tk 500-800 and Korean and Chinese ones at Tk 3,000-5,000 at Dhaka Trade Centre at Gulistan.
Makeshift traders in Gulistan area told the FE that they were getting good response from shoppers.
"We expect to do a good business by selling winter clothes this season," said Khalid Mian, a trader near Bangabandhu Avenue.
