Another week of soaring prices

Onion price up by 557.80pc, says TCB

Most of the key kitchen commodities, including onion, fish, flour, garlic, sugar and cardamom, witnessed a further price hike at retail outlets last week.

Vegetable prices showed a mixed trend. The only solace was egg price as it marked a slight decline.

Onion remained higher as local varieties retailed at Tk 220-250 a kg and imported ones at Tk 170-210 on Thursday.

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) recorded a further 29-per cent hike in onion prices on average last week.

The price of onion witnessed a 557.80 per cent year-on-year rise, TCB said.

According to the TCB data, the price of local onion increased by 542.86 per cent while that of imported one by 572.73 in November this year compared to the corresponding period of last year.

The price hike was much higher than the TCB had estimated.

Local onion varieties sold at Tk 210-230 a kg and imported ones at Tk 140-170 based on quality at Shyambazar, Karwanbazar and Beribandh wholesale markets on Thursday.

Prices of the spice continued to soar unabated despite measures taken by the government.

On Thursday, commerce minister at a programme in Rangpur told the media that onion prices might decline soon with a rise in local harvest.

However, prices of flour (both atta and maida) increased by Tk 3.0-4.0 a kg in a week.

TCB recorded a 2.0-7.0 per cent hike in flour based on quality.

Even sugar prices rose by Tk 4.0-5.0 a kg in seven days.

Garlic prices increased to Tk 160-200 a kg from Tk 140-160 a kg a week back.

Ginger prices, however, fell by Tk 10 a kg but still higher as Tk 140-220 a kg depending on quality.

Finer lentil of Nepalese variety increased to Tk 125-130 a kg from the previous Tk 110-115.

Commodity prices have see-sawed in the past seven days.

Prices of cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, country bean, new potato and radish declined by Tk 5.0-10 a kg.

Cauliflower and cabbage sold at Tk 30-40 apiece, carrot, country bean and new potato at Tk 60-80 a kg, radish and papaya at Tk 30-45 a kg.

Bitter gourd, pointed gourd, snake gourd and stored potato prices have witnessed a Tk 4.0-10 hike per kg.

Bitter gourd was selling at Tk 70-90 a kg and stored potato at Tk 30-32 a kg on the day.

Tomato and cucumber remained static at Tk 90-130 a kg based on quality.

Cardamom rose in price at wholesale level as it sold at Tk 2,550-2,600 a kg from Tk 2,350-2,400 a week back.

Riverine fish like hilsa, rui, katla, shoul, kalbaus and shrimp has seen a hike of Tk 50-150 a kg in a week.

The silvery hilsa was sold at Tk 650-1,150 a kg based on size. Its price rose by Tk 150 in a week.

Rice prices almost remained static maintaining its previous high as coarse and medium varieties sold at Tk 40-50 and finer at Tk 53 to Tk 72 a kg.

Farm egg prices, however, showed a downtrend on Thursday as sold at Tk 100-108 a dozen from Tk 104-114 a week back.
