Stocks witnessed another flat session on Thursday amid choppy trading as investors were mostly cautious amid ongoing volatile market trend.

The market opened on positive note and the key index of the major bourse rose about 20 points within first 20 minutes of trading. But late hour sale pressure led the prime index to close almost flat.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 1.45 points or 0.02 per cent to close at 4,937.

Market analysts said investors remained worried and adopted ‘wait-and-see’ approach despite the government and the central bank took some market supportive measures.

The DSE Shariah Index also saw fractional gain of 0.05 point to close at 1,136. However, the DS30 index, comprising blue chips, fell 3.26 points to finish at 1,755.

Trading activities remained sluggish as total turnover stood at Tk 3.28 billion, which was 5.20 per cent lower than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 3.46 billion.

Gainers took a modest lead over the losers as out of 354 issues traded, 173 closed higher, 131 ended lower and 50 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

A total number of 107,136 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 126.06 million shares and mutual fund units.

The market-cap of the DSE also fell slightly to Tk 3,727 billion on Thursday, from Tk 3,730 billion in the previous session.

National Tubes topped the turnover chart with shares worth nearly Tk 146 million changing hands, followed by Beacon Pharma, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, SEML FBLSL Growth Fund and Standard Ceramic.

SEML Lecture Equity Management Fund was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 10 per cent while Premier Cement was the worst loser, plunging by 7.05 per cent.

The port city’s bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange, also edged lower with its All Shares Price Index (CAPSI) -- CASPI—losing 18 points to close at 15,022 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX –shedding 13 points to finish at 9,122.

Here too, gainers beat the losers as 122 issues closed higher, 98 ended lower and 37 remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 5.18 million shares and mutual fund units worth more than Tk 151 million in turnover.
