Update rules to build robust startup ecosystem

Speakers at a webinar suggested updating the existing rules and regulations to build a robust startup ecosystem in the country.

They also called for providing support for the start-ups, saying that the country's maturing startup hotspot has started drawing international attention.

The webinar titled 'Building a Vibrant Startup Ecosystem' was held on Wednesday, marking the World Investor Week 2022, said a press release.

The Bangladesh Securities and E0xchange Commission (BSEC), Venture Capital & Private Equity Association of Bangladesh (VCPEAB) and World Social Innovation Forum (WSIF) organised the event attended by the representatives from local and foreign startups.

'We are collaboratively trying to build a triangle relationship with two vital regulatory bodies -- Bangladesh Bank and the Revenue Board -- to promote foreign investment, venture capital and private equity firms in Bangladesh," said Dr Shaikh Shamsuddin Ahmed, a BSEC commissioner.

Sami Ahmed, managing director, Startup Bangladesh Ltd., said, "It's an exhilarating time for startup ecosystem in Bangladesh as we see a lot of innovations coming to us for funding."

Asif Mahmood, vice president, VCPEAB and managing director, SEAF Bangladesh Ventures LLC, said, "Our education system needs to be transformed in a way so that the younger generation who are the actual producer and nurturer of innovation can be integrated into our startup ecosystem."

Jenni Risku, board member, World Social Innovation Forum (WSIF), and founder, Women in Tech Conference Asia, said women can actually be a catalyst for the entire startup ecosystem.

James Tan, board member, World Social Innovation Forum (WSIF) and managing partner, Quest Ventures, said, "Singapore, one of the world's leading startup ecosystems in terms of multiple successful startups, is the regional hub for incorporation, venture capital, and international connections."

Sonia Bashir, director, VCPEAB and managing director, SBK Tech Ventures, said, "Being a VC and women entrepreneur, I think that women entrepreneurs or women VCs need to get more attention."

Fahim Mashroor, CEO, Delivery Tiger; and Tanveer Ali, director, VCPEAB, and Chief investment officer, Constellation Asset Management Company Ltd., also spoke in the webinar.
