Stocks witness modest rise at opening

Stocks posted a modest rise on Monday amid volatile trading as investors were mostly cautious amid a lack of clear direction in the market trend.

Following the previous day’s marginal correction, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up 6.61 points, or 0.10 per cent, to stand at 6,485, after the first two hours of trading at 11:30am.

The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, also gained 3.12 points to reach 2,301 and the DSE Shariah Index (DSES) rose 2.57 points to 1,420.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 6.48 billion after two hours of trading.

Market insiders witnessed volatility as investors favoured booking profits on selective stocks while some were busy reshuffling their portfolios amid ongoing dividend declarations by June-closing companies.

Of the issues traded till then, 77 advanced, 94 declined, and 174 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Eastern Housing became the most traded stock till then, with shares worth Tk 590 million changing hands, followed by Orion Pharma, Beximco, KDS Accessories, and Anwar Galvanizing.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange also saw a modest rise till then, with its All Shares Price Index (CASPI) gaining 32 points to stand at 19,092 while the Selective Categories Index (CSX) rose 20 points to reach 11,444, also at 11:30am.
