Stocks extend gaining streak for third straight session

Stocks extended the winning streak for the third straight sessions on Thursday as the buoyant investors continued to put fresh bets on sector-wise issues riding on regulatory steps.

Following the previous day’s steep rise, the market jumped at opening and the key index soared 110 points within 45 minutes of trading. But, the rest of the session eroded most of the initial gains.

At the end of the session, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 38.12 points or 0.57 per cent to settle at 6,668.

The DSEX recovered 212 points in the past three consecutive sessions, after losing 297 points in the previous four trading days.

Two other indices also edged higher with the DSE 30 Index, comprising blue chips, advanced 9.50 points to finish at 2,425 and the DSE Shariah Index (DSES) rose 5.93 points to close at 1,435.

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, crossed the Tk 10 billion-mark after 10 trading days and amounted to Tk 10.61 billion, which was 37 per cent higher than the previous day’s tally of Tk 7.73 billion.

Market analysts said regulatory intervention to stop the recent free-fall caused by the Russia-Ukraine war created a buy pressure in the market.

Gainers took a modest lead over the losers, as out of 379 issues traded, 193 advanced, 147 declined and 39 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Beximco topped the turnover chart with shares worth nearly Tk 499 million changing hands, closely followed by Fortune Shoes (Tk 455 million), BDCOM Online (Tk 400 million), Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (Tk 306 million) and Genex Infosys (Tk 273 million).

BDCOM Online was the day’s top gainer, posting a 9.93 per cent gain while National Tea Company was the worst loser, losing 1.99 per cent.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended higher with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI –rising 161 points to settle at 19,561 and the Selective Categories Index – CSCX gaining 96 points to close at 11,737.

Of the issues traded, 174 advanced, 71 declined and 38 issues remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city’s bourse traded 12.96 million shares and mutual fund units with turnover value worth Tk 279.66 million.
