The government has extended the tenure of the current chief of the stock market watchdog for another four years.

Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam, former chairman and dean of the Faculty of Business Studies of Dhaka University, currently holds the top position of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC).

He was appointed to this position on May 17, 2020 and his four-year term will end on May 16 this year.

Soon, the government will issue a notice appointing him as BSEC chairman for another four years.

Last week, the Financial Institution Division of the Ministry of Finance issued a letter to the prime minister of Bangladesh, recommending Mr Islam as the BSEC head for a second term.

The chief of the securities regulator has organised roadshows in several countries to bring foreign investments to the country's capital market.

He has been leading the market through tough times after the outbreak of Covid and the Russia-Ukraine war and through macroeconomic challenges emanating from raging inflation and currency devaluation.

Following his first tenure for 2022-24 as vice-chair of the Asia Pacific Regional Committee of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), Mr Islam has been re-elected for the 2024-26 term to represent Bangladesh at the regional committee of the world's securities regulators.

Mr Islam was also chairman of Sadharan Bima Corporation, the state-owned non-life insurer and reinsurer.
