Coronavirus is still spreading around the world, despite the high vaccination rate. In fact, the total number of Covid-19 cases has now topped 106.8 million.
According to the latest data released by Johns Hopkins University, the current global caseload and death toll stood at 106,880,652 and 2,339,991, respectively.
In the US, the pandemic shows little sign of relenting. The country has recorded 27,189,188 cases, with 468,103 fatalities, till Wednesday morning, reports UNB.
Brazil on Tuesday said it registered 1,350 deaths due to the novel coronavirus disease in the past 24 hours, raising the country's death toll to 233,520.
According to the Ministry of Health, tests detected 51,486 new cases of Covid-19 infection in the same period, bringing the accumulated number of cases to 9,599,565.
The government said more than 4 million people have been vaccinated following the emergency approval of the CoronaVac vaccine developed by Chinese firm Sinovac Life Sciences and a vaccine by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca.
Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America, has the world's second highest Covid death toll after the United States, and the third-largest outbreak, following the United States and India.
India recorded 9,110 more cases, taking the total to 10,847,304, according to the latest data released by the federal health ministry on Tuesday.
According to the data, the death toll mounted to 155,158 as 78 Covid-19 patients died since Monday morning.
The countries over 3 million cases are the United Kingdom with 3,983,756, Russia with 3,953,970, France with 3,419,210 and Spain with 3,005,487.
Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh on Tuesday said it recorded eight more coronavirus-related deaths and 387 fresh cases in the last 24 hours until morning.
The national case tally soared to 538,765, including 8,228 fatalities. The mortality rate stood at 1.53 percent, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a handout.
Until morning, 484,573 patients (89.94 percent of the total reported cases) have recovered.
Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18 last year.
So far, 3,777,242 samples, including 14,468 in the past 24 hours, have been tested.
Currently, the DGHS said, the daily Covid-19 infection rate stands at 2.67 percent.
Coronavirus vaccination in Bangladesh
The government launched a countrywide mass Covid-19 vaccination drive on February 7.
Doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine that Bangladesh acquired from India’s Serum Institute have been sent to hospitals across the country to make the inoculation drive a success.
The government has trained physicians and nurses to carry out the vaccination drive. So far, top government officials, Cabinet members, judges, policemen, along with general people, have received the vaccine.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday instructed the authorities concerned to bring down the age limit from 55 years to 40 to widen the vaccination drive.
Once one receives the first dose, the second one has to be taken within 8 to 12 weeks.
