Developing, least-developed countries urge developed countries to reduce carbon emission by 2020

Developed countries on Friday were urged to bring down Greenhouse carbon gas emission by 2020 as per the 2nd commitment period of Kyoto Protocol.

Leaders of developing and least developed countries made the call on the fifth day of the 23rd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP23) in Bonn, Germany.

Additional Environment and Forests Secretary Nurul Kadir told UNB news agency that Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Albert Arnold (Al) Gore, in his speech, also underscored the need for reducing the emission of CFC as early as possible to save the world.

According to a recent report published by United Nations Environment Programme, the current plan to reduce the emission of CFC is not enough to save the world.

“The temperature of the globe will be increased by three degrees at the end of this century if the current plan to reduce the emission of CFC goes on,” the report added.

A guideline to implement the Paris Climate Agreement is likely to be adopted during the High-Level Segment of the COP 23 scheduled to be held from November 15 to November 16.

Adhoc Working Group on Paris Agreement (APA) was formed in the last year’s conference, the additional secretary said, adding that all agenda are being discussed in the current conference according to the APA.

The conference started on November 6.

The technical negotiation meetings will be going on till November 15 while the High-level Segment will be held from November 15 to November 16 and the closing session will be held on November 17.
