Leonardo, an Italy-based company, will supply AESA radar to be used in two maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) of the Bangladesh Navy (BN)

The aircrafts will be equipped with Leonardo’s Seaspray 5000E active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, said a report by www.janes.com.

BN recently ordered for RUAG (Dornier) 228 NG maritime patrol aircraft.

The Italy-based company announced in recent statement that it had signed a contract with RUAG Aviation, the original equipment manufacturer and type certificate holder of the Dornier 228, to provide AESA radars for the two new production model Dornier 228s recently ordered by the BN.

The aircraft will be used to help monitor and protect Bangladesh’s 120,000 km² of maritime territorial area and exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

The radars, which can detect small targets in rough seas, will be used by the BN to support anti-smuggling and anti-pollution missions and for the prevention of illegal fishing and migration, said the company, adding that they will be delivered in 2018.
