Govt working to make jute ‘golden fibre’ again: Minister

The government is working to revive the glory days of jute, once known as the 'golden fibre', said Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi on Tuesday.

He made the comment at a rally marking the National Jute Day in front of the Parliament building, reports UNB.

"Many jute factories were shut down, workers lost their jobs and the jute industry was destroyed as post-1975 governments didn't take any initiative to save the sector," he said, according to a PID handout.

The incumbent government has taken various steps and projects to boost production, he said.

"The world is rejecting plastic and moving towards jute. Bangladesh cannot lag behind. Jute will occupy the global market with the joint efforts of the government and the private sector," he added.
