The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) called upon the government to formulate a policy, in order to resolve problems related with the sick industries.

The apex trade body made the call during the second meeting of its Standing Committee on Rehabilitation of Sick Industries at its Motijheel office in the capital on Tuesday.

It also urged the banks to provide long-term industrial loans, aiming to save industries from becoming sick.

Speaking as the chief guest at the meeting, FBCCI President Md Jashim Uddin said the duration of bank loans usually expires even before completing the construction work of an industry by an entrepreneur.

As a result, the entrepreneur becomes a loan defaulter before starting industrial production.

Due to the absence of long-term loan facilities, the industrial units become sick, he observed.

He urged the owners of sick industries to come forward with specific recommendations, in order to help the FBCCI take measures to resolve the issues involving the sick industries.

The meeting also called upon the government to implement two circulars issued by Bangladesh Bank (BB) to terminate liquidation of banks loans.

Senior Vice-president (VP) of FBCCI Mostofa Azad Chowdhury Babu said despite FBCCI's meetings with the ministries concerned, the problems related with the non-textile industries are yet to be resolved.

Speaking on the occasion, FBCCI VP M A Momen said banks can play a vital role in helping revitalise the country's sick industries.
