Bangladesh Railway (BR) is adding 40 more locomotives to its fleet in three years’ time with financial assistance of Asian Development Bank (ADB), Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan said on Monday.

Apart from them, 250 more carriages will be bought, the minister said, after attending the signing of an agreement with an American company for the locomotives at the Railway Bhaban.

ADB and the BR are jointly financing the $135,340,344.41 project, according to a UNB report.

The locomotives will start reaching the country within the next two years. Bangladesh will receive all of them within 2022.

Minister Sujan also promised various development targets including making the railway corruption free, installing rail lines in every district, renovating and modernising the existing lines, and ensuring proper sanitation and hygiene.

He hoped ensuring the services would turn railway into a profitable sector.
