BGMEA, SREDA sign MoU to increase use of renewable energy in RMG sector

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase the use of renewable energy and ensure energy efficiency in the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector.

BGMEA President Dr Rubana Huq presided over the signing ceremony that took place in the capital on Thursday.

Prime Minister's energy adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid and principal secretary to the Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, GIZ Bangladesh Country Director Angelika Fleddermann joined the programme virtually.

Speaking at the ceremony, SREDA Chairman Mohammad Alauddin said there is no alternative to being energy efficient, and businesses and sustainable energy development are an integral part of each other.

The objectives of the collaboration are to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency in the RMG sector to optimise energy consumption and scale up the use of clean energy with the provision to support capacity development, improved competitiveness, and innovation.

Under the MoU, BGMEA and SREDA will work jointly to enhance awareness on both the opportunities to use renewable energy and energy efficiency in all industries and contribute to the journey towards transformation of the energy sector to clean and green energy.

Both parties will make coordinated efforts to mobilise investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency for reducing carbon emission, increasing competitiveness, and scaling up interventions in the garment industry.

Their other collaborations include the utilisation of available rooftops and vacant spaces of different garment factories to install rooftop solar systems and thus allow the garment industry to reduce energy costs within the provision of the government’s net metering guidelines.
