‘Resolving Rogingya crisis not Bangladesh’s responsibility alone’

FE ONLINE REPORT | Friday, 9 April 2021

US President Joe Biden’s special envoy John Kerry on Friday urged the international community to step up efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis saying that it is not Bangladesh’s responsibility alone.

“I know President Biden is very grateful to Bangladesh for the incredible spirit and helping hand that Bangladesh has given to the Rohingya. It is an extraordinary act of generosity but it is very expensive-the cost obviously world community needs to help, and to step up, this is not the responsibility of Bangladesh alone” Kerry said at press conference after his meeting with Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen.

The former US secretary of state said, Bangladesh is also giving an island for providing shelter to the Rogingya refugees but this is not the long term solution and this does not resolve the issue.

In this connection he mentioned about his visit to Myanmar saying that he met with Aung San Sukyii and top generals during that time to convince them on standard human rights issues and on accountability.

“We tried very hard but that was not honoured” the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate repented.

Kerry, who arrived in Dhaka after wrapping up his four-day India visit, was received by the foreign minister at the airport. He left Dhaka in the evening.
