River transport services across the country are in full operation again after being suspended for three days due to cyclone Fani.

Water vessels were permitted to start movement again at 6:05am on Sunday, said Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority’s Inspector Md Humayun Kabir.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued danger signal No 7 for Mongla and Payra ports and No 6 for Chattogram as Cyclone Fani reached within the 915 km of the coastal districts. BIWTA, as a result, suspended all river transport services on domestic waterways across the country from 11:00am on Thursday.

The cyclone, after hitting India and killing at least 12 people in eastern Odisha state, entered Bangladesh on Saturday in a weakened form. At least nine people were killed in Bangladesh on Saturday.

Over 1.6 million people were moved to about 4,000 storm shelters in the coastal districts.

More than 60 people were injured as many families refused to evacuate.

More than 2,000 homes collapsed in six districts during the storm, according to bdnews24.com.

The Met office lowered the danger signals for maritime ports on Saturday afternoon.

“The danger is over,” BMD Director Shamsuddin Ahmed said.
