Police rescued the municipality mayor of Jamalpur from Srimongol of Moulvibazar on Wednesday, two days after he went missing from Dhaka.

Mohammad Rukunuzzaman Rukon, mayor of Sharishbari municipality and Awami League leader, was found at the Kalighat Union Parishad offices of Srimongol around 1pm on Wednesday, said Moulvibazar Superintendent of Police Md. Shahjalal, reports bdnews24.com.

Police said few details were available at this time.

A microbus dropped him off at the local Katiatala tea gardens, the mayor told the media at Srimangal Police Station. He could not say much more.

A guard at the local government offices first saw Rukon, said UP Chairman Pranesh Gowala.

“I received a call from the Union Parishad secretary and went to speak to him. He could only say the word ‘mayor’. We then informed the police.”

The mayor was feeling unwell when he was taken to the OC’s offices at the station. Rukon said he feared he was given some narcotic substance.

First aid was administered by Srimangal Government Hospital’s Dr Ahmed Shibli, who went to the station.

“The mayor was weak,” he said. “He was also sleepy. We gave him some saline. There didn’t seem to be any other medical problems.”

Rukunuzzaman Rukon is also the Sharishbari Municipality Awami League vice president. He also rents a house in Dhaka’s Uttara.

According to his elder brother Md Saiful Islam Tukon, Rukon went missing from Uttara on Monday morning. He filed a general diary over the incident that very night.
