The police have arrested a woman on charges of torturing a six-year-old girl in Feni.

The victim, Priyanka Akhter, has been admitted to Feni Central Hospital with multiple burn injuries.

A neighbour rescued Priyanka and took her to the hospital, said Abul Kalam Azad, chief of Feni Model Police Station.

Police arrested the attacker, Shahana Akhter, after conducting raids in several places, reports bdnews24.com.

The minor girl hails from Gajaria Kandi village in Shorshodi Union in Feni. She works in the film industry, often acting in supporting roles in movies.

Shahana is based in Dhaka, but regularly visits her village home, according to her neighbours.

Priyanka is an orphan whom Shahana claimed as her foster child but always made her do the household chores, said neighbour Zohra Begum, who rescued the child.

“She used to torture Priyanka,” Zohra said.

Shahana went to her house in Feni few days back along with Priyanka. She tortured Priyanka sometime on Monday night, Zohra said.

As she heard someone crying continuously in Shahana’s house, Zohra went there with her husband on Tuesday evening.

They rescued Priyanka and initially admitted her to the local health complex and then transferred her to Feni Central Hospital.

“On Monday, Shahana had beaten her with a stick and at one point poured hot water or oil on her before she locked Priyanka and left the house,” Zohra said citing Priyanka.

The condition of the child is not stable, said Fouzul Kabir, a doctor in the emergency department in Feni Central Hospital.

“Her kidneys were affected because of the multiple burn injuries. She should be taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for better treatment but we’re treating her here, as she has no guardian,” he said.

“We have arrested Shahana and will provide the details through a press meet on Wednesday,” said SM Jahangir Alam, superintendent of police in Feni.
