Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has once again visited the Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialized Hospital in Gazipur and had routine check-ups, in a gesture showing her trust to the treatment of Bangladeshi doctors.

Her sister Sheikh Rehana also accompanied her and underwent some routine health tests, according to doctors of the 250-bed hospital, reports bdnews24.com.

They spoke with the doctors, administration and also had their breakfast in the hospital after giving blood in fasting condition.

“The prime minister came for some routine investigations…blood, ultra-sonogram, x-ray,” ENT specialist Professor Pran Gopal Datta, a visiting consultant of the hospital, told bdnews24.com.

“She is fine. She did not come for any illness. She always wants to consult with Bangladeshi doctors and take treatment here. She has confidence on Bangladeshi doctors,” the former vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University said.

The prime minister and her sister also posed for photo with the doctors and staff.

“They came in the morning at around 8am and stayed nearly for two and a half hours. The prime minister spoke with the staff, administration and enquired about the current status of the hospital and gave her advice to how to improve its services,” Prof Datta said.

This comes contrary to the common practice of Bangladeshi politicians as many of them go abroad for any treatment, even for routine health check-up.

The Gazipur hospital, established in 2013, is a joint initiative of Malaysian firm KPJ and the Bangabandhu Memorial Trust.

It has been named after the Bangabandhu’s wife, Hasina’s mother Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib.

In February last year, Hasina took treatment there and said that she was “satisfied” with the services. She had then also instructed aides not to take her abroad if she fell sick.

Dr Arifur Rahman Nayeem, one of the consultants of the hospital, told bdnews24.com that the prime minister came just as a patient and “did all the formalities accordingly like buying tickets”.

“It’s the most memorable event of my life,” said Nayeem, who was present during the Hasina's interaction with the doctors, when she wanted to know future plans of the hospital from them.
