Number of prisoners in BD stands at 98,480

The number of prisoners as of January 4, 2019 stood at 98,480, according to the Prisons Directorate under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Of the prisoners, 16,124 are convicts and the rest 82,356 are facing trial. The number of female inmates is only 3,207.

There are 68 jails all over the country having a total capacity of holding 36,614 inmates. Of them, capacity for male prisoners is 34,940, while capacity for female prisoners is 1,674.
