‘No discipline on roads yet’

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Tuesday admitted that indiscipline is still there on roads and there has been no let-up in road accidents either.

"I'd earlier said and I'm saying it again there's no discipline on roads yet... Obviously, I have some failures," he said while talking to reporters at the Secretariat.

The minister also said a meeting of the National Road Safety Council will be convened soon where a committee will be formed to recommend ways to end traffic jam and indiscipline on roads, reports UNB.

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) will be overhauled and other necessary steps will be taken to ease traffic congestions, he said. "The traffic situation will improve to a large extent once the ongoing development works are completed."

Replying to a query about stopping the plying of small vehicles on roads and highways, Quader said, "Our local representatives are also trying to take actions against such vehicles. They, however, said most of those run small vehicles belong to middle-class families."

He, however, said they will take a tough decision in this regard.
