New MPs take oath

New members of parliament (MPs) have taken the oath of office.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the oath at Jatiya Sangsad at 11:00 am on Thursday.

Prior to this, elected from Rangpur-6, she took her own oath at the start of the ceremony.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was in the front row, clapped her hands after the oath-taking.

None of BNP-led Jatiya Oikyafront-elects numbering seven were seen in the oath room.

According to the constitution, a parliamentarian will lose their membership in the event of failing to take oath or notify the speaker within 90 days of the start of the first session.

The first session of the new parliament must be convened within 30 days of the oath-taking ceremony.

Jatiya Party Chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad, who failed to take oath for his illnerss, will be specially administered oath at Sangsad Bhaban at 3:00 pm.

Senior Parliament Secretary Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan moderated the oath-taking ceremony.

Eleventh parliamentary elections to 299 out of 300 seats were held on Sunday. The Election Commission announced the results of 298 seats on the same night.

The result of one seat was postponed due to disruptions in the voting on the election day.

Awami League-led Grand Alliance won 288 seats with the leading ruling party securing 259 seats of them.

Jatiya Party, key component of the Awami League-led alliance, won 20 seats.

The party is yet to decide whether to play a domesticated opposition role as in the current parliament or a fully-fledged opposition role without any stakes in the government.
