A 47-member new cabinet has been declared with the induction of a crop of new and young faces to run the Sheikh Hasina-led government for the next five years.

Thirty-six members [25 ministers, nine state ministers and two deputy ministers] of last cabinet have dropped out of the new cabinet this time, including the heavyweights of the Awami League (AL).

None other than the AL-nominated members of parliament (MPs) found place on the list of new ministers.

The MPs of the HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party, who were in dual role in last cabinet as ministers and opposition members, are totally axed this time.

They will be in the opposition bench in parliament.

No lawmakers from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and Workers Party have also been included in the new council of ministers.

However, the new cabinet includes three technocrat members.

The prime minister (PM) and her 24 ministers, 19 state ministers and three deputy ministers will take an oath of office at Bangabhaban today (Monday).

In the new cabinet, AHM Mustafa Kamal has been named as finance minister, Tipu Munshi as commerce minister and Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun as industries minister.

However, Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque has been given the portfolio of agriculture ministry in place of Matia Chowdhury.

Interestingly, a finance minister has been chosen from outside Sylhet for the first time since 1991.

Late Saifur Rahman, SAMS Kibria and AMA Muhith served as finance ministers and all of them were from the Sylhet belt.

Cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam announced on Sunday afternoon the names of the lawmakers who are injected into the new cabinet.

Meanwhile, political analysts said the mixture of fresh blood and experienced ones in the new cabinet is a good decision from the AL high-ups.

The new ministers would successfully face the challenges in the days to come, they hoped.

The experts said only two from the AL presidium members are included in the new cabinet and several heavyweights from last cabinet are axed taking public perception into consideration.

The new cabinet members, including PM Hasina, will swear in around 3:30 pm.

President Abdul Hamid will officiate at the oath-taking ceremony of the council of ministers.
