The High Court has summoned two chief executive officers (CEOs) of Dhaka north and south city corporations to give their explanations on May 15 over the report they submitted on tackling air pollution in the capital.
The HC bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order on Sunday, asking the two officials to appear before the court on May 15, reports BSS.
The court came up with the order after hearing a writ petition filed by rights group Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB). Advocate Manjil Morshed moved the plea on behalf of HRPB.
The same bench on January 28 directed the authorities concerned to conduct mobile court raids to take legal actions against those causing air pollution in the capital.
The court on that day had asked the mayors and the chief executive officers of the two city corporations to raise some kind of boundary walls around the construction sites in the capital, spraying water twice a day in the areas affected most by air pollution.
The court also asked chief executive officers of two city corporations and director general of Department of Environment to comply with the order and submit a report on this in 15 days.
“Following that order, the respondents had submitted their reports, which the court found inappropriate, hence expressed its displeasure. So, the court asked them to appear in person on May 15 to explain the matter,” advocate Manjil Morshed said.
