Sugarcane growers are set to get relieved of paying taxes for development of the roads in the sugar mill catchment areas.

The government plans to repeal Bangladesh Sugar (Road Development Cess) Bill, 1960 in this regard.

The Cabinet on Monday approved a draft of a new law to replace the existing one in its weekly meeting at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in Dhaka.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting.

After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Shafiul Alam said roads in the sugar mill areas are constructed and maintained by different government departments, agencies and local government bodies.

"The sugarcane growers needed to pay the unjustified taxes under the 1960 law. It also appeared obsolete and dysfunctional," he said.

The Cabinet meeting also approved the draft of country's first any legal framework; Abhawa Ain, 2017; titled  to deal with the issues relating to the meteorological activities.

He said the proposed law defined the term 'meteorology'and 'meteorological phenomenon', tsunami, earthquake and other natural disasters.

"The draft law has defined the eligibility of the persons to be considered as the meteorological scientists," the secretary added.

According to the law, all atmospheric events happened within space and beyond will be considered as the meteorological phenomenon, reports BSS.

The meteorological department will have the authority to take training and research programme for capacity building of the concerned manpower, Shafiul added.
