The telecom regulator has finally moved for a total shutdown of mobile internet starting from Sunday midnight amid the general election which is being held today.

The mobile operators have been told to shut down all data services including 2G, 3G, and 4G until Monday 12:01am, a concerned official confirmed the FE last night.

The latest move came just a few hours after the telecom regulatory commission asked the mobile operators to shut down 3G and 4G services. However, at that time, 2G service was kept beyond this restriction.

The decision to shut off the mobile internet was taken during a meeting between the Election Commission and BTRC late on Sunday.

The move is aimed at preventing the spread of rumours during the election, a BTRC official said.

At present, there are 91.8 million internet subscribers in the country. Out of this, around 86 million are mobile internet subscribers.
