Mobile internet service has been restored across the country on Sunday evening after suspending it for almost 18 hours.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) instructed the mobile operators to restore data services including 2G, 3G and 4G at 6:00pm Sunday.

The decision came just hours after the voting of the 11th general election came to an end.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, the telecom regulatory commission asked operators to shut down 3G and 4G services keeping 2G services outside the restriction.

However, later on, the telecom regulator asked the operators to shut down the 2G services as well.

Consequently, mobile internet became completely unavailable from Sunday midnight.

According to concerned officials, the move was taken to prevent the spread of rumours during the election.

At present, there are 91.8 million internet subscribers in the country. Out of this, around 86 million are mobile internet subscribers.
