Bangladesh has slipped two notches in global corruption perception index (CPI) in 2020 as it has been placed at the 12th from the bottom among 180 countries.
However, the country’s position has remained the same, as of the 2019 ranking, at 146 from the top, in the CPI prepared by the Berlin-based Transparency International (TI).
The TI Bangladesh chapter leader has blamed abuse of power and lack of functioning of institutions for the country’s decline in CPI.
Bangladesh scored 26 along with the Central African Republic and Uzbekistan out of 100, according to the index released on Thursday.
It has ranked Bangladesh as the second most corrupt country in South Asia after Afghanistan.
“The CPI for Bangladesh is disappointing,” TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said while releasing the CPI report virtually.
He observed that erosion of political integrity, linkage of politics with abuse of power, and dysfunctionality of key institutions of accountability are some of the major reasons for not improving the country's index.
Certain deficit in ineffectiveness by Anti-Corruption Commission in catching ‘big fishes' is another key reason for worsening corruption situation, Mr Iftekharuzzaman added.
