A court in Chattogram has awarded seven-year imprisonment to a Chinese citizen in a case for gold smuggling three years back.

The Court of Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Dr Begum Jebunnesa also fined the convict Tk 50,000, in default to suffer three months more in jail.

The convict’s name is Fan Ronggui and his passport number is EA 1724348, reports BSS.

The prosecution story in brief is that acting on a tip-off, a team of customs intelligence seized 24 gold bars worth Tk 12 million from the charger light in the bag of Fan Ranggui on May 8, 2019, as the Chinese citizen arrived from Dubai by flight BG-148 and landed at Chattogram Shah Amanat International airport around 7.30 am.

Shahriar Hossain, the assistant revenue officer of Airport Custom House, filed a case in this connection with Patenga thana on that day.

Police submitted charge sheet against him on September 8, 2019, while the court framed charges on February 8, 2021.

After examining a total of nine prosecution witnesses, out of 11, the court passed the verdict today in presence of accused Fan Ronggui.
