Assam’s NRC: BD won’t interfere in India’s ‘internal matter’

Bangladesh has described the publication of draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam as an 'internal matter' of India.

"As of now this is an internal matter," said Indian media quoting Bangladesh High Commissioner to New Delhi Syed Muazzem Ali in Kolkata.

Muazzem also stated that Bangladesh will not interfere there, as per UNB report.

The second and final draft of the NRC is scheduled to be published on July 30, a date set by the Indian Supreme Court.

The High Commissioner said this issue has not been raised at the official level by the government of India with the Bangladesh government at any stage and mentioned that he will not interfere in an internal matter.

Muazzem Ali said the issue can become "bilateral" only after the Indian government takes it up with the Bangladesh government.

He came up with the remarks when asked whether Bangladesh has made any decision against the backdrop of the expected publication of the draft NRC on July 30.

The envoy said as of now he does not want to get into the details. "We all have gone through the newspapers and we all know the origin of this crisis. My only request to everybody is let sanity prevail," he said.

Assam is the only state having an NRC, which was first prepared in 1951.

The High Commissioner also said Bangladesh has currently relaxed its visa regime and is providing five years' visa to the veterans, freedom fighters and businesspeople from India.

He mentioned that Bangladesh government is also working towards providing visa for longer period.
