AL candidate gets show cause notice in Barishal

The Election Commission has sought explanation from Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, the Awami League mayoral candidate for the Barishal City Corporation polls, over allegations of violating the code of conduct.

Returning Officer Md Mujibur Rahman said the commission sent a notice to the candidate on Sunday.

Abdullah has to answer by 6pm on Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.

Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Obaidur Rahman Mahabub submitted a written complaint to the returning officer, claiming that the Awami League candidate held a ‘large rally’ under the name of an ‘uthan boithok’ on Saturday evening.

Asked about the situation, the returning officer said: “We heard from various quarters that Sadiq was holding a rally and that people had gathered there. We have also seen photos of the meeting through various channels. We then sent a notice to him.”

Sadiq Abdullah could not be reached for comment.

The Election Commission has a separate squad to monitor violations of the code of conduct. Asked whether they had lodged a complaint against Abdullah, Returning Officer Mujibur Rahman said:

“We are doing what we can. There are some gaps. It would be easier if people come to us with allegations.

The Election Commission is working to ensure a free, fair and impartial election, he said.

“We are always on the alert in all elections. We are looking to ensure that there are no problems during the election. We are also working to ensure that these elections do not impact the upcoming parliamentary polls.”

Voters in Barishal, Rajshahi and Sylhet will go to the polls on Monday. Seven candidates, including the Awami League’s Abdullah and the BNP’s Mazibor Rahman Sarwar are vying for the position of Barishal mayor.
