UGC-developed software on cards to ease distance learning, plagiarism checking

The University Grants Commission will develop two software packages for facilitating research and distance learning education for universities.

The package will also be able to check plagiarism, said a press release.

Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN), a component of Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) of UGC, will develop the two software packages, said Chairman of UGC Professor Abdul Mannan while addressing as the chief guest a workshop titled "Awareness on Research Gateway and Distance Learning Education" at UGC auditorium in city's Agargaon on Tuesday.

He said BdREN will immensely benefit the learners and researchers of the universities in conducting their research activities and it will also help to reach distance learning education to a large community in a cost-effective and efficient way.

With UGC Member Professor Dr Md Akhtar Hossain in the chair, the event was also addressed by UGC Member Professor Dr Dil Afroza Begum and Project Director (Additional Secretary), HEQEP Dr Gauranga Chandra Mohanta.

Chief Executive Officer, BdREN AKM Habibur Rahman delivered the welcome speech, reports BSS.

The UGC chairman also urged students, teachers and researchers to adopt latest technology for enhancement and attaining excellence in higher education and research.

Professor Dil Afroza Begum said such kinds of software will help in expanding connectivity among the researchers in local and international arena. It will also play a role in stopping plagiarism in research activities.

Professor Akhtar Hossain also stressed the need for making the teaching materials including ICT cost-effective.

UGC Secretary Dr Md Khaled and high officials from UGC and BdREN among others were present on the occasion.
