Govt targets 30pc enrolment in technical education: Nahid

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid today said the government has set a target of 30 percent enrolment in technical education by 2030, aiming to transform Bangladesh into an economically developed country, reports BSS.

"In 2009, there was only one per cent student enrolment in the technical education while the current enrolment is 14 per cent," he told an orientation function at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) here, an official release said.

The orientation function was arranged for 349 students who got scholarship on technical education from Chinese government.

Director General of Directorate of Technical Education Ashok Kumar Biswas, and Chairman of Bangladesh Technical Education Board Md Mostafizur Rahman, among others, addressed the function with Secretary of Technical and Madrasa Education Division Md Alamgir in the chair.

Referring to different developed countries, Nahid said technical education enrolment rates of those countries are above 60 per cent.

"We have also set a target to reach 20 per cent technical education by 2020," he added.

Nahid said government polytechnic institute will be set up at 23 districts, while polytechnic school will be set up each upazila of the country.

"We are promoting knowledge-based education to develop skilled human resources to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income country. Education without skills will create a burden for family as well as nation," he said.
