Earthquake of magnitude 6.6 strikes Solomon Islands

An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck east of a provincial capital in the Solomon Islands on Friday, the United States Geological Survey said.

There was no immediate tsunami threat or reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which hit at a depth of 33 km (21 miles) about 161 km (100 miles) east of Kira Kira, a provincial capital in the South Pacific nation.
