Dhaka accounts for a half of all fatalities
44 more die as Covid deaths approach 2100

On the 121st day of Covid-19 infections, the death toll from new coronavirus approached almost 2,100, with Dhaka division accounting for more than half the fatalities, officials say.
The country recorded 44 new deaths in the last 24 hours while a total of 2,096 people have so far lost their battles to the deadly viral strains, according to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services or DGHS.
Of the deaths, 1,077 or 51.38 per cent of them occurred in Dhaka division, followed by 545 deaths 26 per cent) in Chattogram, 105 (5.1 per cent) in Rajshahi, 90 (4.29 per cent) in Khulna, 89 (4.25 per cent) in Sylhet, 76 (3.63 per cent) in Barishal, 63 (3.01 per cent) in Rangpur and 51 (2.43 per cent) in Mymensingh divisions.
Simultaneously, 3,201 more people were confirmed positive with the virus infections and the number brought the tally of confirmed cases to 165,618.
The recovery rate of novel coronavirus has gone up to almost 46 per cent as 76,149 people have so far recovered in the country, which is now positioned in the 18th place of the global hotspots.
DGHS additional director general Prof Dr Nasima Sultana on Monday's virtual news conference said a total of 14,245 samples were tested in 68 out of 73 labs across the country since yesterday morning.
With the tests, a total of 860,307 samples have so far been tested across the country.
Of the tests, some 3,201 samples were found Covid-19 positive along with 44 more deaths recorded across the country during the period, she said.
With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 165,618 and 2,096 respectively, she said.
Seventeen of the latest deaths were recorded in Dhaka division, followed by 11 in Chattogram, four in Barishal, three in Rajshahi, three in Sylhet and two each in Rangpur, Khulna and Mymensingh divisions, Dr Sultana said.
The DGHS officials claimed 63,801 people are now in both home and institutional quarantine while 16,794 others in isolation.
Globally, more than 11.5 million people were infected with the novel pathogen and 537,433 died until Monday 6:30 pm, according to Worldometer, a website that tracks new coronavirus.
