Asian University for Women holds debating competition virtually

Asian University for Women (AUW) Debating Society hosted their first ‘Virtual AUW Inter-Varsity Debate Championship 2021’ on the 10th and 11th September.

The tournament’s theme ‘Women Leadership’ was influenced by AUW’s mission to educate, nurture, and empower young South Asian women. 56 debaters across Bangladesh came together in teams of 2 to compete with each other where 18 adjudicators were present including 4 chief adjudicators panellist with a total of 150 people joining the event.

The event was held on both Discord and Zoom platforms. On the first day of the two-day event, four preliminary rounds took place and semi-final and final rounds took place on the last day.

Asian University for Women’s Vice Chancellor Professor Nirmala Rao, OBE, FAcSS, attended the closing ceremony along with Professor AKM Moinurzzaman Mollah, Professor Ahmedul Kabir, Professor Sharin Shajahan, Mr Manoj Prasad, and many more. The ceremony ended with the winners’ announcement on Facebook live.

The winners of the event were Bangladesh University of Professionals (Open Champion) and North South University (Novice Champion). After the competition, course vouchers as prizes were awarded to the champions, finalists and the breaking teams. Certificates were also distributed among other debaters.

With Bangladesh Debate Council as the strategic partner, the event was powered by Casper and co-sponsored by Sapna Hotel Group. The knowledge partner was Teach for Bangladesh and media partner was The Financial Express.

Current president of the club Ulfatun Nesa along with other executive board members- Shafa Oyshori, Tahmina Afroz, Tabassum Mehnaz, Sidhrah Mantaha and Aparna Nath played a major role in the successful completion of the event.
