World’s largest burn institute to start journey on Wednesday

The world’s largest burn and plastic surgery institute named after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be inaugurated on Wednesday with an aim to open a new horizon in burn treatment.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the 12-storey institute located next to the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover at Chankharpul area of Dhaka, reports BSS.

Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute was constructed at estimated cost of Taka 5.22 billion.

There are three blocks in the institute. Of those, one block will be the burn unit, one plastic surgery unit and another academic wing.

Health Minister Mohammed Nasim said the institute with 500 beds, 50 intensive care units and 12 operation theatres will be the largest burn and plastic surgery institute in the world.

The minister hopes thousands of burn victims would get advanced treatment from this specialised hospital.

The health ministry has decided to name the institute after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in recognition of her devotion to development of burn and plastic surgery healthcare system.

Chief Coordinator of the Institute Dr Samanta Lal Sen said the institute will provide best treatment facilities to patients.

The institute will help treat more burn patients and make more plastic surgeons to meet the country’s requirements, he said.

Sen, also Dhaka Medical College Hospital Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit Coordinator, said the institute will provide advanced treatment to burn patients while physicians and nurses will also get trainings to enhance their professional excellence.

“Bangladesh Army has constructed the institute with sincerity and efficiency,” said DMCH Director Brigadier General AKM Nasir Uddin.

On April 6, 2016, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction work by laying the foundation stone of the institute.
