Why no compensation for Barguna school victims: HC

The High Court on Sunday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why directives should not be given to provide compensation to the victims, killed and injured in a plaster collapse from the ceiling in a government primary school in Taltali upazila in Barguna district.

The HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader issued the rule following a writ petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer, reports UNB.

Barrister M Mainul Islam stood for the writ petitioner.

The HC also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why their failure in ensuring safety to the students of PK Government Primary School should not be declared beyond legal jurisdiction.

The Primary and Mass Education Ministry secretary, Barguna deputy commissioner, district education officer, Taltali upazila education officer, and president of the school managing committee have been made respondents to the rule which is returnable in four weeks.

Supreme Court lawyer Ishtiaque Ahmed filed the writ petition seeking compensation for the families of the school students killed and injured in the collapse of plasters from the ceiling of the school.

Besides, Supreme Court lawyer Hasan Tarek and Humayun Kabir, on behalf of the Law and Rights Foundation, a human rights organization, filed another writ with the High Court in this connection on Sunday.

The writ also sought Tk 10 million compensation for the family members of the deceased while Tk 10 lakh each for the families of the injured.

The writ also sought an order to conduct a survey on risky educational institutions across the country.

On Saturday, Mansura, a third-grader of PK Government Primary School and daughter of Najib HossainTalukdar of Gendamara village in Taltali upazila of Barguna, was killed and three others were injured after plasters from the ceiling of a government primary school collapsed on them.
