Voting starts in fourth phase Upazila polls

Voting in the fourth phase of the Fifth Upazila Parishad elections has started.

Started at 8:00 am on Sunday in 107 Upazilas under this phase, it will continue until 4:00 pm without any break.

More than 25.5 million voters are expected to exercised their rights.

A Upazila Parishad consists of a chairman, two vice chairpersons, of whom one is a woman.

That means, in this phase, 351 people are contesting for 107 chairman posts, 533 for 107 vice-chairman posts, and 406 for 107 vice chairman posts reserved for women.

Of them, 39 chairman, 22 vice chairman and 27 reserved vice-chairman (for women only) aspirants have already been elected unopposed.

This time, electronic voting machines are being used in Cox's Bazar Sadar, Patuakhali  Sadar, Mymensingh Sadar, Bagerhat Sadar, Munshiganj Sadar and Feni Sadar Upazilas.

Each polling station is being guarded by a security team comprising of 14-16 members drawn from police, Ansar and VDP.

EC Joint Secretary and Director (public relations) SM Asaduzzaman said on Saturday that they had taken necessary preparation to hold this election in a free and fair way.

The BNP and several other parties have boycotted this election that is being held in five phases, the first of which was held on March 10.

The Election Commission is yet to announce the schedule for the fifth phase of the Upazila Parishad election.
