Voter registration begins in city Saturday

The Election Commission is set to start the collection of photographs and fingerprints of potential voters, who filled voter registration forms earlier this year, at specific voter registration centres in the capital on Saturday, reports UNB.

Besides, the dropped-out eligible people, who earlier failed to fill voter registration forms during the data collection campaign, will be able to get registered as possible voters going to the registration centres, Director (PR) at the EC Secretariat SM Asaduzzaman told UNB on Thursday.

On July 25 last, the Commission started the door-to-door data collection drive across the country.

Enumerators collected data of Bangladeshi citizens who were born on or before January 1, 2000 throughout the country this year. They collected data of some 25 lakh possible voters and 13 lakh dead voters during the campaign that concluded in August last.

Subsequently the process of taking photographs and fingerprints of potential voters started in August across the country outside the capital.

Now the Commission is going to begin the collection of photographs and fingerprints in the capital.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda and EC acting Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed will see the voter registration process at Siddheswari Girls College Registration Centre at the city’s Bailey Road on Saturday, Asaduzzaman said.

Besides, Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder will see the process at Kalachandpur Primary School registration centre in Gulshan on the same day, while three other election commissioners Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Brig General (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury at Zigatola Model Primary School registration centre, Muslim Modern Academy centre in Dhaka Cantonment and Mirpur Adrasha High School centre respectively, the official added.

The draft updated voter list will be published across the country on January 2, 2018 to receive complaints over it. And the final voter list will be published on January 31, 2018 after disposing of complaints, if any.

According to the EC's statistics, the country has some 101.68 million voters.
