A former union parishad member was beaten to death by villagers as he was allegedly taking preparation to commit robbery at Batabaria village in Chandina upazila in Cumilla early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Ismail Hossain, 48, son of Mahmud Ali of the village.
Md Samsul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chandina Police Station, said agitated villagers caught Ismail and gave a good thrashing as he and some of his accomplices tried to commit robbery at a house of the village around 2:30 am, leaving him death on the spot.
He was accused of three cases including robbery and torturing woman with the local police station, reports UNB.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy, the OC added.
