The Dhaka University had started a case with police over the vandalism at the vice-chancellor's residence while the Special Branch of police have initiated a separate case relating to the incident.
"Dhaka University authorities have lodged a case while SB filed another case. Altogether there are four cases relating to the campus incidents in past few days," Maruf Hossain Sardar, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police or DMP, Ramna Division, told bdnews24.com on Wednesday.
Maruf said neither has any accused been named nor the number of accused has been mentioned in the case started at Shahbagh Police Station.
He declined to give further details such as the extent of damage mentioned there.
Dhaka University’s Chief Security Officer SM Kamrul Hasan said he accused over 100 unidentified people in the case he started over the attack on the VC’s house.
The charges against the accused include trespassing, and damaging and looting properties worth around Tk 15 million, he said.
Kamrul also alleged in the case that his motorcycle was torched and his wireless handset was snatched away near the Doel Chattar.
The plaintiffs of the two other cases are Shahbagh Police Station sub-inspectors Bhajan Biswas and Rabiul Islam, reprots bdnews24.com
They brought allegations of blocking street at two separate spots on the campus and obstruction to police duty.
Protesters against the 56 per cent quota system in the government jobs fought pitched battles with police in Shahbagh square. Police used batons and teargas to clear the busy roads on Sunday. Several thousand demonstrations then continued their protests on the Dhaka University campus.
In the wee hours of Tuesday, a group of masked vandals entered the VC's residence and indiscriminately ransacked all the rooms of the two-storey gothic building, setting on fire two vehicles and furniture.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman told reporters on Tuesday morning the masked vandals wanted to kill him to create chaos to destabilise the government and the country."
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told parliament later on Wednesday "those who were involved in vandalism and looting must be tried”.
The quota reform protesters, however, said none of them was involved in the attack on the VC’s house. It was an attack by the outsiders to sabotage the ongoing movements, they claimed.
